Numerous Darke County industries have enjoyed success due to the plentiful supply of competent, skilled employees. The labor force is comprised of approximately 30,000 residents. Wage rate surveys consistently show a cost advantage to doing business here.
In 1996, Whirlpool Corporation opened a $12.5 million 185,000 square foot plant for its KitchenAid small appliance division. A quality workforce is the main reason Whirlpool decided to expand in Darke County, according to plant manager Casey Drabik. He described the area workforce as "employees with a proven record of quality work. Already in 1999, Whirlpool has announced a $10 million 70,000 square foot expansion of the Greenville KitchenAid facility.
