County Keeps Up with Manufacturing Comeback

DARKE COUNTY – Manufacturing is on the rise in the Dayton Region, and Darke County is “doing as well as anywhere,” reported Dave Burrows, vice president of development for the Dayton Development Coalition.

The county has recently increased the percentage of its workforce in manufacturing positions, going from 15 percent in 2010, to nearly 23 percent in 2014. According to the Ohio Department of Development, manufacturing ranks as the third largest employment sector in Ohio, behind retail and healthcare.

“That’s a huge difference in under five years,” Darke County Economic Development Director Marc Saluk stated. “Especially when you consider the fact that it takes a couple of years to even get some of those manufacturing projects going, to the point where the company is ready to hire…and it obviously speaks to the whole area, not just to Darke County, because clearly those numbers reflect more than just people getting work within the county.”

Since 2010, Saluk noted that there have been at least a dozen manufacturing expansions, four of which garnered at least 100 new positions, seven generating at least 50 new positions, and half adding between 15 and 50 positions, he said....
