DARKE COUNTY- On Friday, all Darke County schools and five of the largest county manufacturers, in conjunction with National Manufacturing Day, came together in an effort to draw attention to career opportunities available within those organizations.

Held the first Friday in October each year, this event is a coordinated occasion when U.S. manufacturers open theirdoors to demonstrate the potential of modern manufacturing and foster interest in manufacturing careers. A growing grassroots movement, participants are dedicated to overcoming the shared challenges facing manufacturers today and Darke County is no exception.

Prior to the day’s events, all students viewed the film American Made Movie, a feature length documentary, which taught them about how manufacturing drives the economy and is important in maintaining our way of life. Giving them a good basis with which to tour a local manufacturing company, students were then taken to one of five facilities.

Local manufacturers, Whirlpool, GTI, Midmark, BASF and Ramco Electric Motors jumped in full force and presented all county sophomores with the opportunity to tour theirfacilities and hear about their career opportunities.

State Senator Bill Beagle was also in attendance for a portion of the morning, speaking to specific groups about careers in manufacturing. As chairman of the Workforce and Economic Development Committee, Beagle said he wants to see Ohio’s youth be more prepared to enter the workforce in in-demand careers in Ohio.
